DESCRIPTION

Gabala is one of the most beautiful regions of Azerbaijan with a rich and ancient history. It’s located on the bank of Demiraparanchay River & overlooking the highest peak of Azerbaijan – Bazardyuzyu Mountain (altitude 4466 m). Once upon a time this city (Kabalaka) for 600 years was the capital of Caucasian Albania – an ancient state located in the territory of modern Azerbaijan. There are a lot of historical and cultural monuments of different epochs in the region.

Azerbaijan’s Nij village is located in what was once known as Caucasian Albania and this region was Christian for hundreds of years before the arrival of Islam. The land was occupied by Albanian people, tall and fair. And so, in the village of Nij, there is a population of people who are direct descendents of the ancient Caucasian Albanians, and they are known as the Udi people. Amazingly, they still have their own Udi language (using 49 characters), and indeed they retain their own ancient form of Christianity.

There are hundreds of historical and cultural monuments in the region: Albanian temple in the village Amili of IV-VIII centuries,  mosque in the village of Bum of XIX century,  Ustaszhan castle in in the village of Bayramkokha of IX-XIV century, mausoleum of the XVII century in the village of Shafili, Shıkhbaba pir of XVI century in the village of Hamzali, Haji Garib mosque in Nij village and the residence of  Bolu bey of XIX century,  mausoleums of Sheikh Badraddin and Sheikh Mansur of  XV century in the village Hazra.

There are defensive ancient tower in the city of Gabala (IX-XI centuries), the XVIII century mosque and the mausoleum of Imam Ali (XVIII-XIX centuries), Juma Mosque, as well a big historical and ethnographic museum.
