“Old City” or as it’s called locally “Icherisheher” – is a one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and unique historical part of Azerbaijan which is located in the centre of Baku.
The excursion will let you dive into the spirit of the Islamic civilization and you‘ll be amazed of how the Old City combines the ancient and modern buildings. You will see the old mosques and caravansaries, old trading squares and baths houses, hear the history and legends of the Maiden Tower, enter to Shirvanshah’s Palace – the biggest monument of the Shirvan-Absheron branch of the Azerbaijan architecture.
Shirvanhahs’ Palace is an important piece of Azerbaijani history. It was built in 15th century by Shirvanshah kingdom who ruled mostly in the current territory of Azerbaijan in 861 — 1538. The Palace is the biggest monument of the Shirvan-Absheron branch of the Azerbaijan architecture, situated in the Inner City of Baku. The complex contains the main building of the palace, Divanhane, the burial-vaults, the shah’s mosque with a minaret, Seyid Yahya Bakuvi’s mausoleum, a portal in the east – Murad’s gate, a reservoir and the remnants of the bath-house.
Probably if you surfed the internet beforehand to get to know more about Baku, you should already have heard about the Maiden Tower (“Gyz Galasy”) which is situated in the Old Town facing city boulevard and the Caspian Sea. In spite of the inscription on its wall, stating its building time to 12th century and authorship to Masud ibn Davud, there are many doubts about it, as the design of the tower and used stone completely differs from the other buildings that were built around it. Many scientists have different arguments on its building time. It has completely mysterious look, which makes it outstanding among any other buildings of Baku.
