DESCRIPTION

Shemakha

Shamakha, the ancient capital of Azerbaijan located 122 km from Baku. For centuries, Shamakha was one of Azerbaijan’s most prominent cities, an important cultural and trading centre and the royal seat of the Shirvanshahs (9th to 18th centuries). Furthermore, it is known as the root of Azerbaijani literature. Shamakha is interesting not only for its rich nature, but also ancient history. Despite the numerous earthquakes in the region, Shamakha still preserved many historical monuments.

The “must see” places in Shamakha are Juma mosque with its two minarets built in the 10th century, Diri-Baba Mausoleum and the tomb of the Shirvan Khans.

The largest astrophysical observatory in Azerbaijan and the whole Caucasus is also located in Pirkuli, Shamakha. The observatory named after famous Azerbaijani architect, astronomer, mathematician and philosopher Nasreddin Tusi is equipped with modern facilities and one of the largest in the CIS telescope with a mirror diameter of 2 meters.

Lahij

Lahij is a remote mountain village, 1,629m above sea level, comprising some 2,000 residents. Isolation has made Lahij a very atypical Azerbaijani village: Lahiji, a dialect of old Persian, remains to this day the primary language in Lahij. The local people converse in it all the time. They have no alphabet for the language – it is only spoken, not written. In the school, lessons are given in Azerbaijani, with English and Russian being taught as additional languages. But in the homes and playground Lahiji is the usual language.
Unlike other Azerbaijani villages, agriculture is not an option here in this rocky barren landscape, hence Lahij´s development into a craft centre. Lahij is village of coppersmiths and carpet-makers, with the men working at the copper and the women at the carpets. There are some copper workshops, each employing one or two men, and there is one carpet factory which employs 30-35 women. Additionally, some women make carpets at home. Nowadays town Lahij is an historical-architectural heritage, preserved by the government in its original form.
